I had a pretty cool experience a couple of days ago. I went to Beyond Rest in Perth, to have a floatation tank therapy experience! It lasted for a full 60 minutes and was a very relaxing & intriguing experience!
When I arrived at reception I immediately felt a sense of calm. There were lots of Himalayan salt candles and other beautifully scented candles burning, and the energy of the place felt welcoming and peaceful. I also loved the artwork at reception and in their gallery, plus the street art at the rear of the building.
Owner, Nick Dunin, first experienced floating and it’s amazing benefits in Europe and wrote out his entire business plan to open his own floatation clinic the day after his first float!
Nick showed me through the procedure and then left me for an hour to enjoy the experience.
What is floating?
The floatation tank contains a super-saturated Epsom-salt solution, which is about 25cm deep. This creates an environment similar to that of the Dead Sea, which lets you float effortlessly on the surface of the water and enjoy a feeling of weightlessness and buoyancy! As soon as you’re in the tank / pod, you stay afloat.
The tank has a lid which you close once inside, allowing you to block out noise and the outside world, and be open to letting amazing things happen.
For the first 10 minutes, the light is left on and relaxing music is played to get you into the zone. Then the light and music is turned off, and you are left in complete silence and darkness to mull things over without distraction, rest, de-stress and heal as your brain pumps out dopamine and endorphins π
What are the benefits?
People float to relieve stress, recover from injuries, fight addiction, eliminate chronic pain such as fibromyalgia and back pain, and much more. Floating naturally increases your dopamine levels, boosting your mood and leaving you with a pleasant afterglow that lasts days afterwards.
Everything you experience while floating comes from within yourself. It’s the perfect time to reflect on your life, and reports of creative and personal insights abound.
After years of practice, people can enter theta brainwaves state through deep meditation. Float tanks get you there effortlessly and are thought of as training wheels for meditation.
My experience
I thoroughly enjoyed my experience. At first, I was thinking one hour would feel like forever, but I quickly became very relaxed and when the music came back on 10 minutes before the end of my session, I was wishing I could stay in longer!
When I got out, I felt surprisingly energised! After showering and blow drying my hair, I sat in the chill out room, had a peppermint tea and basically munged out and chatted to Nick for 15 minutes. I felt very relaxed by this stage, and when I got home had to have a nanna nap!
I’m writing this the day after my treatment, I feel positive, focused and creative. I definitely give floating the big thumbs up! π

I’ve wanted to do this ever since that episode of the Simpsons! I need to find a place in Melbourne and make it happen – it sounds fantastic.

Hey Helen, how are you? It is amazing! I don’t think there’s anywhere in Melbourne that does it unfortunately! I could be wrong though…if you do find somewhere, please let me know π

Hey Helen & Liz
There is a centre in Melbourne called Gravity Floatation Centre in Northcote.
